Obituary of Joseph W. Hickey
Rev. Joseph W. Hickey a resident of Tarrytown, NY died on Good Friday, April 18, 2014 at Calvary Hospital, Bronx, NY. He was 83.
Son of the late William J. and Eleanor V. Foley Hickey, he was born in Tarrytown, NY on August 8, 1930. He was a graduate of Cardinal Hayes High School, Cathedral College and received his bachelor's degree from St. Joseph's Seminary. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 2, 1956 at St. Patrick's Cathedral.
Fr. Hickey's assignments after ordination included St Aloysius Church, Livingston Manor; St Columba Church, Chester, NY and St. Agnes Church, Manhattan. In 1959 he was assigned to St. Joseph Church, New Paltz where he served until 1972 when he was appointed assistant pastor of the Church of the Sacred Heart in Hartsdale where he served until 1977. In 1977 he was appointed Administrator of St. Mary's Church in Wappingers Falls where he became pastor in 1983 and served there until 1992. In 1992 Fr. Hickey was appointed pastor of St. Francis Xavier Church in the Bronx where he served until 1998. He then served as parochial vicar at the Church of the Transfiguration, Tarrytown, NY until 2002.
During his semi- retirement he served as a chaplain at the VA Medical Center in Montrose from 1998 to 2011 and for the retired sisters at Marymount College in Tarrytown from 2004 to 2012. In 2013 Fr. Hickey became a resident of Our Lady of Consolation in the Bronx.
Fr. Hickey is survived by his sister Rita M. Cullo and her husband Leonard A. of Cary, NC, two nieces Trisha and Cathy and two nephews Leonard Jr. and William, sixteen grand nieces and nephews and several cousins.
A visitation and vigil service will be held at the Church of the Transfiguration, 268 S. Broadway, Tarrytown, NY on Tuesday April 22, 2014 from 3-7 PM. Additional visitation will be at St. Mary's Church, 11 Clinton St., Wappingers Falls, NY on Wednesday April 23, 2014 from 9 to 11 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM celebrated by His Eminence, Timothy Cardinal Dolan. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery.
