Obituary of David S. Bagley
David S. Bagley, known to close family members as "Sye", to friends as "Dave" and to gym members as "The Mayor", passed away on December 14, 2017. He was 87.
Born on June 15, 1930 in Kenbridge, VA, David, son of Horace Bagley and Nellie Epps, was the seventh of thirteen children. He grew up with his siblings in a culture of caring for each other after their mother passed away at a young age.
David joined the U.S. Air Force after high school and served in Okinawa during the Korean War. After serving his country, he earned his bachelors and masters degrees in Electrical Engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology (Newark College of Engineering). The love and value of education was a key aspect of David's life. A life-long learner, he never stopped engaging his keen mind. He also inspired his children to earn advanced degrees in various fields of study.
David's first engineering job was at ITT in New Jersey. Five years later in 1964, he and the family moved to Poughkeepsie to start a long and successful career at IBM. There, he was a chief contributor to industry-changing products like the IBM System 370. David retired from IBM in1993 after a long and fruitful career in both the technical and managerial areas.
For over 50 years, David participated in community service and volunteerism. He served on the boards of numerous organizations, such as the Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union, the Eleanor Roosevelt Center at Val-Kill, and the Upsilon Tau Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. An accomplished singer, David sang with the RSVP Golden Age Singers, Cappella Festival Choral Group, and many other local church choirs.
David is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary; sons David, Jr., Trent and Keith; daughter-in-law Bobbie; grandchildren Laura, Khaira, and Khalique; and siblings Cleophus, Betty, Reginald and Elmira.
