Obituary of Leonard J. Reed

Leonard J. Reed was called home June 28, 2014 after a long illness. Leonard was born August 18, 1933 in Southern Pines, North Carolina. He graduated from Pine Plains High School and then joined the National Guard before attending Hartwick College, earning a BS in Chemistry. He would go on to earn a Masters in Chemistry from Syracuse University. He worked as a Chemist at IBM for 32 years, where he developed many patents. He then taught Organic Chemistry and Physics at Marist College and RIT. Leonard married the love of his life Doris Hancock in 1960 and they remained married throughout his life. Leonard was an avid tennis player and volunteered for the Boy Scouts, CYO Basketball, Little League and ran the Town of Wappinger Basketball Clinic. He was the oldest son of Lucy Walden and Wallace Reed, both deceased. He is survived by his three brothers John Morrison, Melvin Reed and Fred Reed, and his three sisters, Carol Reed Deloctch, Chris McCall and Tina Treadwell. Leonard and Doris had four children: Kimberly Reed Cassell, deceased, Dr. James Todd Reed, Mark Leonard Reed and Darla Marie Reed. He is survived by seven grandchildren: Trenteny Reed, Sierra Cassell, Aishaah, Jahaah, and Jahnae Reed and Dana and Jarrett Monte. His life is a legacy and he will be missed by all. Family will receive friends on Thursday, July 3, 2014 from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at Straub, Catalano & Halvey Funeral Home, 55 East Main Street in Wappingers Falls. A funeral service will follow at 12 noon at the funeral home; Rev. Dr. Edward L. Hunt will officiate. Interment will follow at Fishkill Rural Cemetery, 801 Route 9 in Fishkill.
